Maine Barn Restoration 101

North Atlantic Restoration builds and restores barns in Maine and New England. Our company has a reputation for our ability to restore even the most dilapidated antique barns to their original beauty. We are committed to authenticity. We can rebuild a crumbling stone foundation with local granite, or order you sound antique timbers to replace rotting ones. We have even taken down a barn piece by piece and rebuilt it in another location. When possible we work with independent contractors to recycle river beams and original lumber from barns that have been taken down in order to replace any rotted materials with authentic substitutes. When we are finished your barn will look just like it did when it was first built, and will last for generations. We also have experience installing modern comforts such as radiant heat, electric cuploa windows, and sustainable materials such as stress skin panels, solar panels, and even Tesla batteries, to make your barn feel like home.

The first thing to rot on an old barn is typically the perimeter sill. The sill is a timber that goes on top of the foundation.

Often there is not only a rotting sill, but also molding and water damage to the side of the barn

As sills slowly rot they cause an uneven settling of the barn into the earth. The bump in this roof is evidence of that.

Here the entire side of a barn is jacked up and held with temporary posts. The next step is to pour a new foundation and slide into place a new 8' x 8' sill.

A crumbling stone foundation is shored up with an interior concrete retaining wall. This strengthens the foundation and adds support for the sill.

Here rotted joists have been replaced with vintage timbers that are sound.

Here, an old, leaky roof caused this entire wall to fail.
